Smart Irrigation & Sensor-Based Farming

Smart Irrigation & Sensor-Based Farming

Smart Irrigation & Sensor-Based Farming

Learn how technology can transform irrigation and crop management. Understand drip irrigation, sensors, soil moisture monitoring, automated irrigation, fertigation, controllers and data-based decision-making. Develop practical Smart Farming skills that can be applied in agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, nurseries, greenhouses and commercial farms to improve water efficiency and productivity.

You learn to design drip and micro-sprinkler layouts, place soil-moisture and weather sensors, wire basic controllers, and use readings to schedule irrigation and fertigation. The focus is field-ready skills for farms, nurseries, landscapes, and greenhouses—reducing water waste while keeping uniform crop moisture.

Level 02 – Primary Courses. High-Demand Career Skills.

Module 1: Crop Water Needs & Irrigation Planning

  • Estimate crop evapotranspiration using stage, canopy, and season
  • Map field or bed zones with different water requirements
  • Choose drip, micro-sprinkler, or sprinkler for crop and topography
  • Draft a simple irrigation schedule before automation

Module 2: Drip & Micro-Irrigation Components

  • Select mainline, sub-main, lateral, and emitter sizes for uniform pressure
  • Install filters, pressure regulators, and air vents at correct points
  • Lay laterals and emitters to match row spacing and root zone
  • Pressure-test zones and fix leaks before crop establishment

Module 3: Sensors, Controllers & Automation Basics

  • Place soil-moisture probes at representative depths and locations
  • Connect rain, flow, or tank-level sensors to a controller or logger
  • Set start/stop thresholds and safety overrides for dry or wet conditions
  • Download or copy sensor logs for weekly review

Module 4: Fertigation & Chemigation Safety

  • Inject fertiliser through the irrigation line at correct dilution
  • Flush lines after fertigation to prevent emitter clogging
  • Store chemicals and stock tanks with clear labelling and access control
  • Record injection rates and crop stage for each application

Module 5: System Commissioning, Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Measure emitter discharge and correct uneven blocks
  • Clean filters and acid-flush emitters on a maintenance calendar
  • Diagnose low pressure, clogged drippers, and valve failures
  • Winterise or drain lines where seasonal shutdown is required

Module 6: Data-Based Scheduling & Water Use Review

  • Compare sensor trends with visual crop stress signs
  • Adjust run times after heat waves, rain, or growth-stage changes
  • Calculate water applied per hectare or per bed for reporting
  • Document changes and outcomes for the next season plan

Who This Is For

Minimum 12th pass or equivalent. Suitable for farmers, irrigation technicians, landscape and nursery managers, and horticulture students who want to install and manage sensor-linked drip systems on commercial sites.

Skills You Can Practise

  • Design and lay out drip and micro-irrigation for field or protected crops
  • Install and calibrate soil-moisture and flow sensors with controllers
  • Operate fertigation safely and maintain emitters and filters
  • Adjust irrigation from sensor data and field observations
  • Keep maintenance and water-use records for each zone
