Saffron Cultivation & Production
Learn the science and practical techniques of high-value saffron cultivation. Understand quality planting material, corm selection, growing conditions, soil and soilless systems, temperature and moisture management, flowering, harvesting, drying, grading and post-harvest handling. Develop practical knowledge to explore saffron cultivation as a specialized horticulture enterprise, including controlled-environment production opportunities.
Level 01 – GHEP. Global Horticulture Excellence Program. Complete Professional Program
This two-week programme covers the full saffron production cycle: choosing healthy corms, preparing field or soilless beds, managing temperature and moisture through vegetative growth and flowering, hand harvesting stigmas, and drying and grading for market-quality spice. You work through repeatable field checks and post-harvest steps you can apply on a small plot, in a polyhouse, or in a controlled indoor unit.
Module 1: Saffron Botany, Quality & Farm Economics
- Identify saffron plant parts and the flowering cycle that drives harvest timing
- Compare field, raised-bed, and soilless options for corm establishment
- Estimate corm requirement, spacing, and basic input costs for a starter unit
- Record yield, drying loss, and grade mix to track batch quality
Module 2: Corm Selection, Treatment & Planting
- Grade corms by size and health and reject damaged or diseased stock
- Store corms with correct humidity and temperature before planting
- Prepare beds or containers with drainage suited to local conditions
- Plant at correct depth and orientation and label batches for traceability
Module 3: Growing Conditions & Crop Management
- Monitor soil or substrate moisture without waterlogging corms
- Adjust shading, ventilation, or mulching to moderate temperature extremes
- Schedule light irrigation and foliar care during active growth stages
- Scout for rot, pests, and nutrient stress and note corrective actions
Module 4: Flowering, Harvest & Stigma Handling
- Plan daily harvest rounds when flowers open in the cool morning
- Separate stigmas cleanly with minimal floral debris
- Weigh fresh stigmas and link harvest logs to bed or batch ID
- Handle flowers and stigmas hygienically to protect colour and aroma
Module 5: Drying, Grading & Quality Control
- Dry stigmas using controlled heat or traditional methods without scorching
- Grade threads by length, colour, and moisture for consistent lots
- Pack in light-proof, airtight containers with batch labels
- Document moisture content and storage location for each lot
Module 6: Corm Renewal & Season Planning
- Lift and divide corms after foliage senescence where the system allows
- Select replacement corms for the next season by size and vigour
- Rotate beds or sanitise substrates to reduce disease carry-over
- Draft a simple annual calendar for planting, irrigation, and harvest labour
Who This Is For
Minimum 12th pass or equivalent. Suitable for horticulture and agriculture students, progressive farmers exploring high-value spice crops, nursery staff, and entrepreneurs who want structured, practical training before investing in corms or protected saffron production.
