Greenhouse & Polyhouse Management
Learn how to professionally manage protected cultivation systems. Understand greenhouse and polyhouse planning, structure, climate management, irrigation, fertigation, crop selection, pest management, production planning and economics. Build practical skills for modern commercial cultivation and develop the knowledge required to manage protected farming projects efficiently.
Over one month you learn to run a greenhouse or polyhouse as a production system: choosing structure type and crop, managing heat and humidity, operating drip and fertigation, scouting crops, and planning batches against market windows. Training emphasises daily routines—ventilation, irrigation scheduling, sanitation, and record-keeping—you can use on commercial vegetable, flower, or nursery crops under cover.
Level 02 – Primary Courses. High-Demand Career Skills.
Module 1: Protected Cultivation Systems & Layout
- Compare greenhouse, polyhouse, and shade-net structures for local climates
- Read basic layout plans for bays, paths, and service areas
- Match structure choice to target crop and season length
- List foundation, anchoring, and cladding maintenance checks
Module 2: Climate Control & Ventilation
- Monitor inside temperature, humidity, and light with simple tools
- Operate side vents, fans, and shading to reduce heat stress
- Plan misting or pad-and-fan use where installed
- Log climate readings and link them to crop stage
Module 3: Growing Media, Beds & Crop Establishment
- Prepare raised beds, grow bags, or containers with correct drainage
- Select vegetable, flower, or nursery crops suited to protected culture
- Transplant or sow with spacing that supports airflow and picking
- Stake, train, or prune crops according to type
Module 4: Irrigation, Fertigation & Nutrition
- Size drip lines and emitters for bed length and crop row
- Mix and inject fertiliser through fertigation safely
- Flush lines and clean filters on a fixed schedule
- Adjust irrigation run time using crop stage and weather notes
Module 5: Integrated Pest & Disease Management
- Scout weekly for common greenhouse pests and leaf symptoms
- Use sticky traps and hygiene to reduce infestation pressure
- Apply permitted biocontrol or spray options with safety intervals
- Record treatments and re-entry times per bay
Module 6: Harvest, Grading & Post-Harvest Handling
- Harvest at correct maturity for market or nursery dispatch
- Sort, grade, and pack produce to reduce damage in transit
- Cool or shade sensitive crops after harvest where needed
- Label cartons with date, crop, and bay traceability
Module 7: Production Planning & Unit Economics
- Build a simple crop calendar aligned to local demand peaks
- Estimate seedling, input, and labour cost per crop cycle
- Track yield per square metre and compare across batches
- Plan rotation or fallow periods to rest beds and reduce soil-borne issues
