Aquaponics Technology
Learn the integrated production of fish and plants through aquaponics. Understand system design, fish selection, biofiltration, water quality, nutrient cycling, plant selection, feeding, system monitoring and maintenance. Develop practical knowledge to establish small-scale aquaponic systems for education, urban farming, commercial experimentation and sustainable food production.
Level 04 – AELP. Agriculture Experiential Learning Program. Practical, Project-Based and Experiential Skill Training.
Over one month, you connect fish culture with plant production in a closed-loop system—from layout and biofiltration to water quality, feeding, and daily monitoring—so you can set up and maintain a small-scale aquaponic unit for learning, urban farming, or pilot production.
Module 1: Aquaponics Principles and System Types
- How fish waste, bacteria, and plants interact in a recirculating system
- Media bed, NFT, raft, and hybrid layouts for small installations
- Choosing scale for education, home, or experimental commercial use
- Safety, hygiene, and basic equipment familiarisation
Module 2: System Design and Components
- Fish tanks, grow beds, sumps, and plumbing layout logic
- Pumps, air supply, and flow rates for stable operation
- Media selection and bed depth for root zone support
- Sketching a workable design for a defined space and budget
Module 3: Fish Selection, Stocking, and Feeding
- Species suited to local climate and beginner management
- Stocking density, acclimation, and daily observation routines
- Feed types, ration, and avoiding overfeeding that harms water quality
- Signs of fish stress and when to adjust management
Module 4: Biofiltration, Water Quality, and Nutrient Cycling
- Nitrification basics and the role of biofilter media
- pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and temperature checks
- Water top-up, partial exchanges, and balancing the loop
- Simple logs to track trends and catch problems early
Module 5: Plant Selection and Crop Management
- Leafy greens, herbs, and other crops common in aquaponics
- Seeding, transplanting, spacing, and harvest timing
- Matching plant demand to available nutrients in the system
- Plant health checks and basic pest awareness in grow beds
Module 6: Monitoring, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting
- Daily and weekly maintenance checklists
- Cleaning filters, clearing clogs, and pump care
- Common failures: algae, oxygen crashes, and nutrient imbalance
- Restart and recovery steps after minor system upsets
Module 7: Small-Scale Setup Project and Review
- Planning a pilot unit for your space, crop, and fish choice
- Input list, layout diagram, and operating budget outline
- Sustainable food production and urban-farming use cases
- Presenting your aquaponics plan for trainer feedback
Who This Is For
Minimum 12th pass or equivalent. Suitable for agriculture and horticulture students, urban farmers, educators, entrepreneurs testing soilless food production, and hobbyists who want structured, experiential training in integrated fish-and-plant systems.
Outcomes
On completion, you should be able to:
- Explain aquaponic nutrient cycling and choose a suitable small-system layout
- Design basic plumbing, biofiltration, and grow-bed arrangements
- Manage fish stocking, feeding, and routine water-quality monitoring
- Grow and harvest appropriate crops in an aquaponic grow bed or channel
- Maintain the system and troubleshoot common operational issues
Training builds skills; it is not a statutory licence and does not include job or placement guarantees.
